Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree - The Barbaric Roar Fist Weapon Build Guide
Today we're diving into one of my absolute favorite playstyles: a build focused entirely around the fist weapon class. These weapons offer lightning-fast attacks and incredible chase-down potential, but they traditionally lack one crucial element—hyper armor for those moments when you're outnumbered and need to trade blows. If you're looking to optimize this build quickly, you can buy Elden Ring Runes to level up faster and get the stats you need. That's where Barbaric Roar comes in to save the day.
Why Barbaric Roar + Fist Weapons?
Fist weapons excel at:
· Rapid attack chains that keep pressure on opponents
· Amazing chase-down capabilities for catching runners
· Low recovery frames letting you stay aggressive
· What they lack is a way to trade hits when enemies get overly aggressive. Barbaric Roar solves this perfectly by providing:
· Hyper armor during the heavy attack follow-up
· Massive burst damage when you land that armored strike
· A damage buff to your overall AR
· With my current setup, your base AR sits at 440, but with the Barbaric Roar buff active, it jumps to 483. That's serious damage for such fast weapons!
Optimal Talisman Setup
Your talisman choices will vary depending on which fist weapon you're using:
For the Pata (or weapons favoring running attacks):
· Lacerating Crossed-Tree Talisman - Boosts those running attack damage numbers
For Star Fist (or weapons favoring heavy attacks):
· Rotten Winged Sword Insignia - Synergizes perfectly with multi-hit heavy attacks
Core Talismans (Keep these regardless):
· Roar Medallion - Absolutely mandatory. Increases damage of your Barbaric Roar heavy attack
· Highland Axe (off-hand) - Yes, you read that right. Holding this in your off-hand buffs Barbaric Roar's heavy attack damage even further
· Bull-Goat's Talisman - Boosts poise, helping you trade more effectively
Optional Damage Maximizers:
· Exalted Flesh - Physical damage buff
· Uplifting Aromatic - Damage buff plus damage negation
Fashion & Stats
The Look:
· Helm: Banish Knight Helm
· Armor: Banish Knight Armor
· Gauntlets: Fire Prelate Gauntlets
· Greaves: Bull-Goat Greaves
· This setup provides excellent poise and defense, which perfectly complements the fist weapon class's need to get up close and personal.
Stat Distribution (Standard Strength Build):
· Vigor: High health pool (prioritize this!)
· Endurance: Enough for medium roll with your fashion setup
· Strength: Dump as much as possible here
· Dex/Mind/Faith/Int: Minimum requirements for your chosen fist weapon
Gameplay Strategy
The Core Combo:
1. Activate Barbaric Roar (gains damage buff + unlocks hyper armor heavy)
2. Look for aggressive opponents who want to rush you down
3. Trade into their attacks using the heavy attack follow-up
4. Watch them eat massive damage while you tank through
Situational Tactics:
1. Against Runners:
· Running light attacks have incredible range and speed
· The chase-down potential is genuinely absurd—if someone tries to run, they're dead
2. Against Shields:
· Charged R2s can guard break through weapon blocks
· Shields might save them from one hit, but not from the follow-up
3. Against Groups:
· Use the hyper armor to trade with the most aggressive target
· The burst damage often catches players off-guard—they don't expect to lose the trade
· Jump heavy attacks can tank through lighter attacks
4. Against Wizards:
· Stay mobile and use cover
· Barbaric Roar buff makes your gap-closing much more threatening
· Once you're in, they can't escape the pressure
Matchup Notes
1. Blasphemous Blade Users (aka "Blasphemous Billy"):
· They love to trade. Let them.
· Your hyper armor + damage buff means you win every exchange
2. Moonveil Spammers:
· Constant L2 pressure can be annoying
· Use terrain to close distance
· Once you're in, they fold quickly
3. Backhand Blade Users:
· Watch for the turn-and-burn R2
· Light rollers require more R2 usage from you
· Counter-attacking is key
4. Wizard Teams:
· They'll spam projectiles constantly
· Use the environment—the ground might be thin enough for your AoE rocks to hit through floors
· If they trap themselves in dead ends, that's a free win
5. Great Katana Users:
· Respectable poise and range
· Roll catching with fist weapons works beautifully
· High ping can make spacing weird, but your range often surprises them
Advanced Tech
The "Boulder Bombing" Strategy:
If you're below an enemy team and the ground is thin enough, your Barbaric Roar rocks can hit through floors. Watch for their light effects to track them and unleash devastation from underneath.
The "Trapped in a Corner" Special:
When enemies corner themselves (especially in places like the Halo Tree dead end), you've already won. Your hyper armor and damage output in close quarters is unmatched.
Parry Awareness:
Some players will fish for parries. The Barbaric Roar heavy attack has multiple hit instances—even if they parry the first part, the follow-up often catches them.
Weapon Recommendations
Star Fist (The Star of the Show):
· Insane damage with Barbaric Roar
· Multi-hit R2 synergizes with Rotten Winged Sword Insignia
· The roll catch potential is "crazy" according to empirical testing
Pata:
· Excellent with running attack talismans
· Great for light-roller opponents
· Different flow but same core strategy
Spiked Caestus / Iron Ball:
· Similar performance to Star Fist
· Slightly different moveset but same principles apply
Sample Invasion Moments
The Hidden Path to the Tree Ambush:
When invaders find you buffing in a corner, they've already made their first mistake. If they follow you into a dead end, they've trapped themselves. Your hyper armor turns their aggression into their downfall.
The Three-Wizard Standoff:
Fighting a full team of casters in tight quarters seems daunting, but:
1. They'll spam projectiles even when you're not in line of sight
2. Use terrain to close distance
3. If they run out of FP, they're defenseless
4. One hyper armor combo changes the entire fight
The Dragon-Commune Invasion:
Sometimes you'll invade players farming the dragon. The key is managing multiple threats:
· Jump attack bleed builds
· The host's scaled fashion (respectable taste, by the way)
· The actual dragon aggro
Use the chaos to isolate targets and let the environment work for you.
The Understanding Phantom:
Sometimes you and a phantom can reach an understanding—they fight you, the host fights the boss. These are some of the most enjoyable invasions. Parry attempts, dagger swaps, and honorable duels amidst PvE chaos.
Closing Thoughts
This build transforms gauntlets from mere suppression tools into a true threat. The "Savage Roar" heavy strike grants you the power of a "fatal blow" when enemies become overly aggressive. With its damage bonus, super armor, and multi-hit potential, you can turn the tide of any battle. If you need to gear up quickly, you can buy cheap Elden Ring Items from MMOEXP to get all the equipment and consumables you need. Attribute points are allocated on the right side—primarily focusing on Strength, while also considering Stamina and Vitality. Equipment appearance is entirely up to you, but choosing a tank-like piece of gear greatly benefits this playstyle. Charms can be flexibly combined depending on the weapon, but the "Roaring Medal" and the off-hand "Highland Axe" are essential for maximizing "Savage Roar" damage.
